Science Week so far in Owls....

Lesson: Science

Class: Reception (Owls) Year: 2021 - 2022

We are really enjoying Science week so far. We have been learning about our planet and the solar system. We have looked at the work of the space scientist Maggie Alderin Pocock. Her dream is to go to space and after lots of hard work has become an expert in space and achieved an award from the Queen for her amazing work.
The children have really enjoyed finding out about space.  The loved studying books about the solar system. Today we read stories about going to space, saw rockets blast off and watched astronauts moving around the international space station. They were fascinated by the lack of gravity.
We then had our turn in the Science Dome. We are very grateful to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) who have fully funded this experience for us. Unfortunately it was impossible to get decent photos inside the dome, but the children enjoyed a ‘journey’ to see the stars in the sky, our moon, the planets orbiting the sun, and a closer look under the sea on planet Earth. This was a fantastic unique experience and the children were ‘buzzing’ when they came out!

In forest school this week the children learned about planet Earth how we must look after it.  They made mini planets Earths out of natural materials and wool.

This morning Mrs Odhams did some experiments with the children. They investigated raisins ‘bobbing’ in lemonade and surface tension of water using glitter and soapy fingers.

Lots of the Owls have said they want to be Scientists when they grow up! We are really pleased you have been so inspired by your activities so far this week Owls and you really have been great scientists!
