Chinese New Year
Date: 20th Feb 2023 @ 1:20pm
On Friday 20th January, the children came into a the classroom to find two bunnies. They were all super excited and were so brilliant with them. This weekend was Chinese New Year and it is the year of the rabbit, so we thought it would be fantastic for the children to experience rabbits first hand and to use this to help them remember Chinese New Year. All of the children listened so well, asked fantastic questions, were quiet so as not to scare them and were gentle whilst holding them. We kept out rabbit friends with us until lunchtime when they were taken back to their home. Throughout the day the children learnt about the story of how the animals were selected for the Chinese zodiac cycle, we looked at last years animal and next years as well as the ones on the years they were born. We learnt about what Chinese New Year is and how the people of China celebrate and how people around the World celebrate out of respect for the Chinese people as Chinese people can live anywhere in the World as well as their country. We watched a video about the fireworks and also the Chinese dragons, whilst listening to the Chinese music. A range of activities were provided, the children enjoyed making lanterns to illuminate at the weekend, writing numbers in Chinese, making paper bunnies, creating a paper plate zodiac cycle, moving the sand to create colourful fireworks and mixing and pouring red and yellow rice. It was a fantastic day and the children were so excited, enthused and interested, there was certainly a buzz within the classroom. It was so wonderful to see the children celebrating another culture and having a glimpse into other peoples lives and celebrations. Well done Owls!
