Barn Owls Autumn 2

Date: 5th Nov 2021 @ 10:07pm

Week One - 2nd-5th November

In phonics we have been exploring rhyming words through rhyming picture books and games, such as rhyming bingo and rhyming basket.

Our new role play has been set up in the outside play house as a veterinary surgery. The children have enjoyed imaginative play, dressing up as vets and animals and treating the poorly pets.

We enjoyed learning about bonfire night and made our own salad spinner fireworks.

Week Two - 8th-12th November

In Maths we have been learning about the shapes; circles and squares, incorporating them into lots of exciting activities. We have done shape hunts, shape pictures, and shape car mats.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their first forest school session, exploring and identifying nature and wildlife around the school site.

This week we have learnt about remembrance day, making our own paper plate poppies.  We visited the school hall for a remembrance day assembly and to observe a minute's silence. We are very proud of all of our Barn Owls for listening beautifully and for being respectful during this important moment.

Week Three - 15th-19th November

Throughout the week we have been enjoying lots of clever finger activities to help develop and strengthen our fine motor skills. We have made pasta threading jewellery, dough gym and button patterns using pincer grips.

During phonics we have explored the different noises we can make through body percussion by playing games such as simon says, repeat after me and incorporating body percussion into poems, songs and stories.

On Friday we supported Children in Need by wearing spots and sparkles to school. We explored a pudsey sensory tray, made pudsey ears and sorted colour pompoms with tweezers.

Week four - 22nd-26th November

This week we have started our new topic of winter celebrations around the world. We have been learning about the Jewish festival of Hanukkah and created our own handprint menorahs. The children have also been getting into the Christmas spirit by helping to create our new indoor role play area.

We have been developing our clever brains by playing lots of board games, jigsaws, matching and memory puzzles.

The children have also enjoyed exploring the main school playground and have absolutely loved following the daily mile, practicing their running, skipping, hopping and jumping skills.

Week five - 29th-3rd December

This week we have been working on our mark making skills through many different activities, such as salt trays and paintbrushes, pen control sheets and finger drawing in flour. Some children are now independently writing their own names.

On Wednesday the children were very excited to find an elf had come to visit our classroom. He has been named Tinsel and seems to be getting up to lots of trouble.

Friday saw us celebrating Christingle in church with the whole school. We all made our own Christingles and learnt about the different elements and the meaning of Christingle.

Week six - 6th-10th December

This week has been all about celebrations!

We have enjoyed learning about the story of the nativity and have loved reading the story Jesus’ Christmas Party. We have created our own angels visiting baby Jesus in the stable.

On Tuesday and Wednesday our wonderful Barn Owls participated in our school nativity, The Sleepy Shepherd. They all made us so proud with their performance on the stage. Amazing singing and dancing Barn Owls!

We had the giant wooden building blocks out on Friday and the children, very creatively, created Santa's sleigh and reindeer.

Week seven - 13th-17th December

A very busy end to the Autumn term with lots of Christmas fun.

On Monday we joined the whole school in the church for our carol service. Well done to all Barn Owls who joined reception in singing Twinkle Twinkle. You were all amazing! We had a visit from Milo the Christmas dog on Tuesday and on Wednesday we had a very yummy Christmas dinner in the hall. On Thursday we enjoyed a very funny visit from Pickle Bottom the Elf, who showed us some amazing magic tricks. Finally to end the week we had our class Christmas party with games, music, activities and dancing.
