Spring term

Date: 11th Mar 2026 @ 2:14pm

It has been another busy and exciting term at Hazelbury Bryan Primary School, filled with learning, creativity and wonderful experiences for our pupils.

World Book Day was a fantastic celebration of reading across the whole school. We began the week with a special visit from author Justyn Edwards, writer of the Great Fox series. The day started with an imaginative and inspiring assembly, followed by creative writing workshops for Key Stage 2 in their classrooms. Children also had the opportunity to have their books signed, which was a real highlight.

Both children and staff came to school dressed as their favourite book characters, creating a wonderful buzz throughout the day. Lessons focused on books by the much-loved author Julia Donaldson, and classes worked collaboratively on creative activities inspired by stories including Stick Man, Tiddler, Zog and Room on the Broom. Pupils also enjoyed making predictions about a new story, Gruffalo Granny. The day ended with a whole-school sharing session where children proudly presented their work – a true celebration of creativity and a shared love of books. A big thank you goes to parents and staff for the incredible costumes and props that helped make the day so special.

Our Eagles class recently enjoyed a wonderful trip in the sunshine to Nothe Fort. Dressed as evacuees, the children fully immersed themselves in their World War II topic. They explored a wide range of wartime artefacts, including gas masks, ration books, coins, kitchen appliances and laundry equipment. Pupils also had the chance to walk around the top of the fort and examine some of the historic machinery. The children represented our school exceptionally well and gained a valuable insight into life during wartime. Meanwhile, our Year 6 pupils continue to work hard preparing for their SATs next term.

This term our Year 1 class has been enjoying forest skills sessions, making the most of opportunities to explore the natural world. They have been identifying different trees and searching for minibeasts as part of their outdoor learning. Our Key Stage 2 children have also been taking part in orienteering sessions with Prime Sports as an after-school activity.

We have had a wide range of after-school clubs running this term, including dance club, Pound fitness, Minecraft club and a creative club for our Reception and Year 1/2 pupils.

Another fantastic opportunity this term has been Bikeability training for our Year 5 and 6 pupils. They first completed Level 1 on the school playground, learning essential cycling skills such as bike maintenance, gliding smoothly, controlling their bikes and being aware of their surroundings. They then moved on to Level 2, putting their skills into practice on the roads. This involved learning how to start and stop safely, pass stationary vehicles, understand signals and road markings, and share the road with other traffic.

The children also had great fun at the Spring Disco, organised by our wonderful PTFA. We recently held a non-school uniform day to raise donations for the upcoming PTFA Spring Bingo on 20th March, which promises to be another enjoyable community event. Thank you to all our parents, children and staff for their continued support and involvement. Once again, I feel privileged to be the headteacher at our wonderful, little school.

We wish everyone in the community a very Happy Easter and an enjoyable break.
