Spring 1 Week 5
Date: 7th Feb 2024 @ 9:44am
Another busy week in Owls! This week in maths we are becoming experts in number 5 and the composition of the number. The children have been spitting five into different parts and trying to recall without counting the different combinations of numbers that make 5 e.g. 2+3, 1+4, 5+0.
In Plan, Do , Tell the children met the last of Percy's characters-Badger. He teaches us to concentrate, try our best and not to give up. When reviewing our learning we talked about times when learning is hard because we come across problems. We explored how we can change our ideas and come up with solutions instead of giving up. The children tried to relate this to their own experiences during the session and came up with some fantastic examples e.g. when a tall tower was too wobbly so lying it down meant it could be made longer and not fall over and break.... amazing problem solving Owls!
In assembly this week we heard about National Storytelling Week. We then enjoyed a yoga session all about telling stories.
In music we have been practising finding the pulse to different pieces of music. We had lots of giggles showing the pulse with different parts of our bodies this week!
Throughout phonics, we have been continuing to consolidate our knowledge of the digraphs, qu, sh, ch, th and ng. The children have been looking for them in words and thinking of words that have them in. They have been taking part in a range of activities that help their learning of these such as picking fruit with words on and matching to the pictures, writing words on tablets and much more. We even went outside to chalk words with them in and to play games using the digraphs on the playground. We have been exploring the story of 'Handa's Surprise,' as this is set in Africa and this is one of the places that Granny visits in our other story. The children have been making puppets, ordering the story, writing captions about the story and making playdough fruit.
Finally we had an extra special forest school where we explored different types of trees. We listened carefully and learnt about some trees in our school field. We also listened to a wonderful, magical forest story.
Another busy week Owls! We are so proud of each and everyone of you. Well done.
