Spring 1 Week 2

Date: 20th Jan 2024 @ 11:13pm

What a busy week we have had! We have started out new topic of 'Around the World'. We read 'My Granny went to Market', which is about a Granny who buys a carpet from Istanbul and travels all around the world on it. We are going to be learning all about the different places she went over the coming weeks. We made our own flying carpets, decorated with repeating patterns and then we flew on them!! The children were so excited to suggest place to fly and then off we went (with a little help from Google Earth!) We saw our school from the air as we took off and then went to the beach, Scotland, the North Pole and Ireland and London and many more! The children have been very interested in maps and the globe.

In maths this week we have practising our subitising skills (recognising quantities without counting). The children are getting really good at this now. We have been practising seeing groups within the quantities for larger numbers e.g. 'I can see 3 there and 2 there, so I know there must be 5".

On Tuesday and Wednesday the children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in workshops with Flis from "The art of being brilliant." She worked with the children on being positive and how to be happy. She encouraged the children to share happiness by saying kind things, which in turn encourages others to do the same, she talked through trying new things and gratitude as well as random acts of kindness and so much more. The children really enjoyed their sessions and we will be developing this as a school over the coming months.

In PE, the children have been taking part in team games. We played a game of mountains and volcanoes, treasure island and tail tag. The children worked in teams to achieve a goal and did super well at supporting each other.

Throughout Phonics, we have been consolidating our Phase 2 phonemes and moving onto Phase 3. We have begun to recal our next set j, v, w, x. The children have been segmenting and blending using a range of activities such as potion making by reading the words and adding the correct ingredients, searching for initial sounds in slime, practicing our handwriting as well as using our sounds to label features of Granny from our story.

An excellent week Owls, you are all superstars!
