Spring 1 Owls First Week Back! 01/01/24
Date: 6th Jan 2024 @ 10:36pm
Welcome everyone and happy new year. We hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year. It has been fantastic seeing all of the children and hearing all about their wonderful Christmas news.
What a great first week back! We have been super busy already.
In Phonics this week we have been recapping all of our sounds from Phase 2, ready to start Phase 3 next week. We have been practising our segmenting and blending (breaking words down into individual sounds and blending them together again) to help with our reading and writing. To practise this, we have been matching letters, scooping ping pong balls with sounds on, making tracks for trains after reading the name of the train, using the interactive whiteboard to match short cvc words to pictures as well as popping water balloons after reading the cvc word written on them. The children loved this specific activity and were all super excited when the balloons went pop!
Within Maths this week we have been recapping shape and pattern. The children have made circles and triangles using skipping ropes, beanbags and markers outside and used natural objects to make them inside. We then hunted through shaving foam to find hidden squares and circles. The children all loved getting messy. We carried out a range of activities to support the children's learning of shapes such as using the interactive whiteboard to feed the monsters the correct shape, physically feeding shape monster boxes the correct shapes, making shapes from elastic bands on the boards, shape matching and more. The children also explored repeating patterns using a range of different resources. Finally we looked at the 'Northern Lights.' The children were fasinated by the coloured and patterns in the sky that occurs. We used chalk and shapes to make our own northern light pictures and they turned out brilliantly.
In PE we played 'The floor is Lava,' varying the different ways of moving such as hopping, skipping, jogging, walking, running, as well as moving with partners. The children had to dodge the volcanoes, hop over the volcanoes and count different volcanoes before moving quickly to a safe place when they erupted.
Finally, we took the opportunity to run outside and look at a very bright rainbow which turned out to be a double rainbow. The children talked about the colours, shape and brightness of the rainbow and we even thought there must be a pot of gold nearby.
A fantastic week back. Well done Owls. Have a great weekend everyone.
