Owls First Week Back!

Date: 5th Nov 2021 @ 10:09pm

Welcome back Owls!

Wow, what a fantastic first week back. The children have settled back in super well and we have welcomed a new addition to the class. All the children have been wonderful at making him feel very welcome. Welcome Findley!

This week in Maths, we have been focusing on the numbers four and five. The children have had fun exploring these numbers in a variety of ways such as using numicon, 5 frames, children, fingers and blocks to name a few. We have looked at the different ways that we can make 4 and 5 as well. The children have been on a hunt around the outdoor area, looking for number cards 0-5, ordering them and then adding the corresponding number of stones to match the number. In addition, to celebrate bonfire night, the children have drawn 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 fireworks to match each number as well.

In Phonics, we have continued to learn the next set (h, b, f),  as well as recap previously learnt sounds. We have been furthering our phonic skills by segmenting and blending the sounds, beginning to read and write words where approriate. Within English sessions, we have watched a video of fireworks and read firework rhymes and poems, we have thought about the sounds that they make. We then used our phonic knowledge to write the intial sound or short word.

As it was Bonfire night today, we had a bonfire themed day. The children used shaving foam, paint and glitter to print their own firework pictures, they used whiteboards to copy firework patterns, they worked on fine motor control/pencil control by following firework lines and shapes and then colouring their picture in. Mrs young kindly told the children a fascinating verbal story about Bonfire night, which they were all fully emersed in and listened with awe and wonder. Thank you Mrs Young. They also took part in firework Yoga and we talked about why we have Bonfire Night and Firework Safety. Remember Owls, when using sparklers, one hand behind your back so that you don't touch the hot part (the other hand holds the sparkler at the bottom of the safe part),  keep lots of space between you and others, then carefully pop it in a bucket of water when it has finished. Never touch the hot part. Great sparkler safety discussions today!

Thank you and well done to the children who have completed their phonics home learning. A new set has been added, please ensure any previous sheets are completed, as well as new ones ready for Thursday. Your support really does reinforce what has been taught in school.

A wonderful, fun week. Well done Owls! We hope you have a fantastic weekend celebrating 'Bonfire Night.' Remember to post any photos onto your tapestry account, so that we can see what you have been up to. Stay safe and we will see you next week.
