Our Week in Owls 9/10/23

Date: 19th Oct 2023 @ 9:38am

In Maths this week we have been focussing on 1:1 correspondence when counting (saying one number for each object). The children have really enjoyed doing surveys to find out which vegetable, colour, pet, etc is the most popular in our class. They have been carefully recording one mark for each child surveyed. After some initial support some children were even designing their own surveys to find out which ice cream flavour they liked best, as well as which eye colour was the most common in our class. In Maths we have also been subitising to 4. Looking at how three is made up and whether it has to be three of the same object or if it can be three different objects, or even two of one object and one of another. We also explored length. We compared and used the vocabulary longer, shorter, longest and shortest. The children had lots of activities to look at length including compare snakes, conker snakes, drawing snakes on whiteboards and using numicon rods to make pictures.
On Tuesday we enjoyed World Mental Health Day. After an initial assembly we had an active day doing a 'Stormbreak' (activities that focus on children looking after their mental health through movement), the daily mile, yoga and music. The children also gave tokens of appreciation (paper stars and hearts) to the people throughout the school who help them❤⭐.
In Phonics this week, we have been learning the next set; g, o, c, k. The children have had a range of activities to help them retain these and we have enjoyed playing an online phonics game, using the lightbox to put out glass pebbles, using the whiteboards, sorting objects into the correct baskets as well as practising our letter formation.
We continued our learning about harvest this week after our visit to the church. The children learnt all about the importance of growing and farming. They loved exploring the farm, animals and tractors and were very excited to make a harvest wreath and a scarecrow.
In Forest School, the children worked as a team to create a huge den altogether. They used string and a big sheet to create their masterpiece. Afterwards, they were each given a woodland creature and had to create their own mini den homes for them.
What great work Owls! Amazing work you have done this week, great learning!
