Barn Owls Spring 1

Date: 7th Jan 2022 @ 9:43pm

Week One - 5th-7th January

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to all our children. It has been lovely listening to all your holiday news.

On Wednesday we had a wellbeing day. The children enjoyed learning new yoga poses, relaxed to the sound of a Tibetan singing bowl and explored many different relaxation and mindfulness activities and games.

Week Two - 10th-14th January

This week we introduced our new topic, nursery rhymes. We have really enjoyed creating and decorating our new role play area. It looks fabulous and the children are already enjoying exploring and enhancing their fantastic imagination. We have been singing lots of nursery rhymes, this week focusing on Hickory Dickory Dock.

During our PE sessions this week we have practiced listening to and following instructions, with a variety of hoop and bean bag games. On Thursday the children chose to play one of their favourite games, Duck, Duck, Goose.

Week Three - 17th-21st January

This week we have been exploring the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty through creative activities including sand play, construction and art. We loved creating our emotion Humpty Dumpty's.

During our music sessions we played the African drums, playing along to the beat of nursery rhymes and repeating back simple patterns.

Week Four - 24th-28th January

Barn Owls have been working very hard this week at developing their fine motor control. We have enjoyed daily sessions of dough gym to fun and energetic music, practising a series of hand and finger exercises to improve fine and gross motor dexterity, hand-eye coordination and self-esteem.

This week Barn Owls have enjoyed singing along to the nursery rhyme, Incy Wincy Spider. We have created colourful spiders using our clever fingers to thread and twist pipe cleaners to create 8 legs.

Week Five - 31st-4th February

This week we have celebrated National Storytelling Week. We really enjoyed joining Dorset Libraries on Zoom for a virtual story telling event. Professional storyteller Cassandra Wye told us her interactive story ‘Take a Little Walk Little Bear’. The children really enjoyed joining in with the actions and respective phrases. Fantastic story telling Barn Owls.

On Tuesday 1st February we celebrated Chinese New Year and learnt about the different animals in the zodiac race. We enjoyed recreating our own race, moving like different animals. This year is the Year of the Tiger. We created collage lanterns, Tiger bunting and used chopsticks to feed noodles to the Tiger.

We have been enjoying one of our favourite nursery rhymes, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. On Friday we baked star biscuits, learning about following a recipe and weighing out ingredients.

Week Six -  7th-11th February

This week we have been supporting children’s mental health week and the theme ‘Growing Together’. We have focused on skills to help us grow and develop and how we can help support our friends and family. We have enjoyed many activities, including yoga, ribbon dancing and emotion painting.

Our themed nursery rhyme of the week is Hey Diddle Diddle the Cat and the Fiddle. The children have enjoyed acting out the nursery rhyme through imaginative role play and sand tray exploration. We have also created our own moving artwork of the cow jumping over the moon.
