A busy week in Owls class beginning 25.9.23

Date: 2nd Oct 2023 @ 4:56pm

This week we have started teaching letter sounds and numbers. The children have been very excited about this and are enjoying furthering their learning through all the activities in our indoor and outdoor environments.
In Maths we have been learning to 'subitise' (recognise small quantities of objects without the need to count them) sets of 1, 2 or 3 objects. The children have enjoyed games like 'splat the matching quantity' and 'snap'.
On Tuesday we celebrated European day of Languages, we decided to learn some Romanian. The children were so interested in this and commented on similarities and differences between English and Romanian. Many of them commented on how difficult it must be to try to speak in a different language all day. They were very excited to hear our Romanian classmate speak in her own language and she also enjoyed teaching us sharing he language with us. We learned to sing 'The Wheels on the Bus' and count to 5 in Romanian!
Throughout the week the children have learnt the first set of sounds s, a, t, p. We have had a range of activities set up for them to take part in, all linked to the learnt sounds. We have also continued to explore the story 'The Colour Monster.' We talked about other words that mean happy, sad, calm, angry and scared and we have thought about what that may look like.
In Forest School, the children created bird feeders using a pipe cleaner and some honey hoops. They used their pincer grip to thread them on which is great for fine motor control. Afterwards, we explored the forest school area, balancing on logs and reels, digging and transporting mud, making cakes in the mud kitchen, rolling apples down the pipes and working out how to make them roll faster and using sticks to make flowers.
What a fantastic week Owls! You are doing so well. What superstars you all are!
